Accomplishments.
Over the course of the nearly ten years at Latham &
Watkins, provided project management and programming support
related to department operations and legal technology
applications.
These include:
- ASP Application. Ported the PowerBuilder/Sybase
Review Program (see next item) to the intranet using
Microsoft ASP and Visual Studio. Completed working
prototype covering about 50% of application
functionality.
- Firmwide Review System. As a team leader and lead
developer, developed a firmwide review system for Latham
& Watkins utilizing PowerBuilder 4.0 and then 5.0 and
Sybase System 11 running on NT. This system is very text
intensive and has replaced over seven separate programs
for review of partners by associates, associates by
partners, paralegals by supervisors, etc. These programs
had all been specified by separate committees or
departments and, while serving the same purpose, had
numerous small 'traditional' differences which had to be
negotiated through in order to produce a single data
repository and a consistent user interface. Process runs
every 6 months and each review period brings numerous
requests for modifications and new features. Used by over
900 attorneys and others in 10 offices. Latest version
includes generated Word documents for most attorney
reviewers accessed through DOCSOPEN (with automatic
polling, parsing and updating of central database),
automatic distribution of reports in PDF format via
E-Mail and an intranet help and download page to aid in
various aspects of the review process.
- Conflict of Interest System. As a team leader and
lead developer, developed a conflicts of interest
detection system to replace prior mainframe full text
search and retrieval system. Utilized Verity TOPIC full
text indexing and Sybase relational database both running
on AIX on IBM RS6000. Have ultimate responsibility for
all hardware and software in this system. Developed
PowerBuilder (version 3.0, 4.0 and now 5.0) front-end for
user input and update of database along with wide variety
of administrative and end-user reports.
- KKR/RJR Merger - As a team leader, developed
automated Responses to Federal Trade Commission inquiry.
Concurrently developed redundant database applications in
R:Base and C/Btrieve to provide statistical analysis and
reporting on potential antitrust implications of the
largest merger in U.S. history.
- Document Management System. As sole developer and
then team leader, developed several iterations of
document management system for firm-wide use in all word
processing centers. Written initially in R:Base, later
versions in C, Btrieve and C-Worthy.
- Business Development and Planning Committee Automated
Partner Origination/Proliferation Data Analysis.
Developed R:Base application which consolidated
analytical data on origination and proliferation of firm
business by attorneys. Included mainframe data updating
and downloading, automated PC questionnaires.
- National Forms Retrieval System. (Sole developer.)
Developed using C, Btrieve and MHS.
- Firm-standard LAN and Applications Configuration
Development. Assisted in the development of
firm-standard LAN and PC applications configurations,
including sophisticated WordPerfect document assembly and
formatting macros. Conducted extensive comparative
evaluations in the areas of document management systems,
application development tools, word processor and other
areas resulting in recommendation and purchase.
- Automated Timesheet Entry System. Participated in
design of new system for timesheet mainframe data entry
via high-speed OCR scanning.
- Automated Nightly Database Update. Extracts data
from mainframe time and billing and other data,
distributes it to all L&W offices and updates a
variety of databases including Sybase on AIX and NT,
Clarion and formerly R:Base and other formats. Includes
automatic E-Mail reporting of progress and any errors to
specified individuals.
