The very nature of Islam demands that this Ummah be an EDUCATED nation which seeks knowledge and values beneficial knowledge and those who teach it. It is not a mere set of rituals and symbols which can be passed from generation to generation.

This knowledge is derived from the Book and the Sunnah.  The very FIRST communication of Allah to His final Messenger was:

Not "bismillahi", but "bismi rabbika".  The murabbiy, who cherishes, guides and trains us to all that is pleasing to Him. Allah made clear from the very beginning that HE is al-murabbiy and thus His laws are perfect, complete and unchanging.

This command (اقرأ) is a call to education, to culture and to a comprehensive search in the heavens, the earth, the mountains and the seas - in all of Allah's creation - for all truth and knowledge which is of benefit. The VERY first words of this message are about the pen and knowledge.

The ability to acquire knowledge is what distinguishes humans from the rest of Allah's creation. It is one of just three things which may continue to add to our scales after we have died.

Respect for knowledge demands respect for the people of knowledge and humility with one's own station in this regard.

If this is the status of 'ilm generally, then the students and teachers of the knowledge of the Shari'a and Islam have the highest station in this regard because of the nature of the knowledge they seek and their intention purely to please Allah with the seeking and application of this knowlege.

It is obligatory that we push a sufficient number of our children to pursue deep knowledge of Allah's Shari'a. Whoever Allah wishes for them GOOD, he gives them FIQH (understanding) of this deen. This is the only knowledge which will benefit in the here and the hereafter.
