The Dangers of Hawaa & Shahwa

Rush to full submission to Allah before death takes you by surprise.

اتقوا الله فقد سعد من اتقاه، وفاز من آثر حقه على نفسه ومناه، ونجا من قدم رضاه على هواه يٰأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءامَنُواْ ٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلاَ تَمُوتُنَّ إِلاَّ وَأَنتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ [آل عمران: 102].

The truthful believer - may Allah make us one - sets for himself high standards and lofty goals. He struggles to free the self from the bonds of its desires and its pride and ego. His objective is the hereafter and the place of permanence. He seeks in every single day and night to prepare his final resting place with all kinds of good deeds and righteous actions - and what a beautiful resting place it is, insha Allah.

وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَشْرِى نَفْسَهُ ٱبْتِغَاء مَرْضَاتِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱللَّهُ رَءوفٌ بِٱلْعِبَادِ [البقرة: 207].

The greatest fear for the well-being of the believer in this realm of being tested is fitna which blurs truth from falsehood, urges and drives (ash-shahawaat) which lead one to self-deceit and personal inclinations or character flaws (hawaa) which leads one astray from the way of truth. These are serious ailments, the greatest of tests and huge obstacles in our way. When they prevail in an individual, a group or a society, they corrupt and destroy.  The Prophet (sas) said:

((إن مما أخشى عليكم شهوات الغي في بطونكم وفروجكم ومضلات الهوى)) رواه أحمد[1].

عباد الله:

Ash-shahwa (desires) and hawaa (personal inclinations) have very similar meanings except that hawaa relates more to intellectual confusion and illusions in belief and understanding of deen and self while shahwa mostly relates to pleasures and following base drives away from what is right. Each shahwa which is fallen into has a hawaa as its foundation and its starting point.

Allah tells us in the Qur'an about nations who came before us who were greater in power, wealth and numbers. However, they drifted into desires and opinions and fell into corruption and sin. They indulged in the pleasures of what they had been given in disobedience to the Giver of all things and they delved into the deen with lies, insincerity and forgeries. Allah's punishment came to them and no one could help them. Their desires and their self-deception were their downfall.

كَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ كَانُواْ أَشَدَّ مِنكُمْ قُوَّةً وَأَكْثَرَ أَمْوٰلاً وَأَوْلَـٰدًا فَٱسْتَمْتَعُواْ بِخَلَـٰقِهِمْ فَاسْتَمْتَعْتُمْ بِخَلـٰقِكُمْ كَمَا اسْتَمْتَعَ الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ بِخَلَـٰقِهِمْ وَخُضْتُمْ كَٱلَّذِي خَاضُواْ أُوْلَـئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ فِي ٱلدنْيَا وَٱلآخِرَةِ وَأُوْلَـئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ [التوبة: 69]

So BEWARE, dear Muslims of following in their footsteps and imitating their way.

The most difficult jihad is the jihad against hawaa because to it belongs a HUGE and complex battlefield where the problem is not simply the strength of the opposition but its trickery and its disguising of realities and creation of illusions.

((أفضل الجهاد أن يجاهد الرجل نفسه وهواه)) رواه الديلمي وغيره[2].

ويقول شيخ الإسلام ابن تيمية رحمه الله تعالى: "جهاد النفس والهوى أصل جهاد الكفار والمنافقين، فإنه لا يقدر على جهادهم حتى يجاهد نفسه وهواه أولاً، حتى يخرج إليهم، فمن قهر هواه عز وساد، ومن قهره هواه ذلّ وهان وهلك وباد"[3] انتهى كلامه رحمه الله تعالى.

The heart is a container. So, the best heart is the one which contains the most good and guidance and the worst of them is the one which contains the most enmity and corruption. Take care of this little piece of meat the condition of which determines your overall condition here and hereafter. Whoever denies his self its illegitimate inclinations gets a rest from this life and its trials. He is protected and preserved from its tribulations.

وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّاهَا فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَاهَا قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّـٰهَا وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّـٰهَا [الشمس: 7 – 10]

 يقول رسول الهدى : ((كل الناس يغدو فبائع نفسه فمعتقها أو موبقها)) رواه الترمذي[4].

إن سلطان الهوى يقوى بكثرة دوافعه ودواعيه، وأنصاره ومعاونيه ...  ومن خاف الفوات بادر بالمتاب قبل الممات، يقول النبي :

((حفت الجنة بالمكاره، وحفت النار بالشهوات)) متفق عليه[5].

Accuse your self and take it to account in the most severe fashion (BEFORE turning your attention to the inequities of others) as to the correctness of what it loves and the goodness of what it yearns for. The eye of desire is blind and its ears are deaf. Take the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (sas) as your criterion and your clear proof.  These and only these - and only if you TRULY open your heart to them are put your self under the harshest scrutiny for faults or shortcomings - can make clear that which is unclear.

يِـٰأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءامَنُواْ إَن تَتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّكُمْ فُرْقَانًا [الأنفال: 29]

 يقول رسول الهدى : ((إني قد تركت فيكم شيئين لن تضلوا بعدهما: كتاب الله وسنتي)) رواه الحاكم[6].

Beware also of taking companions from those who follow hawaa over guidance. Socializing with such is a danger and a test

أَرَءيْتَ مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَـٰهَهُ هَوَاهُ أَفَأَنتَ تَكُونُ عَلَيْهِ وَكِيلاً أَمْ تَحْسَبُ أَنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ يَسْمَعُونَ أَوْ يَعْقِلُونَ إِنْ هُمْ إِلاَّ كَٱلأَنْعَـٰمِ بَلْ هُمْ أَضَلُّ سَبِيلاً [الفرقان: 43، 44].

ولذا كان السلف رحمهم الله تعالى يقولون: احذروا من الناس صنفين: صاحب هوى قد فتنه هواه، وصاحب دنيا أعمته دنياه.

أيها المسلمون:

وَلاَ تَتَّبِعْ أَهْوَاءهُمْ عَمَّا جَاءكَ مِنَ ٱلْحَقّ [المائدة: 48]

وَلاَ تَتَّبِعْ أَهْوَاءهُمْ وَٱحْذَرْهُمْ أَن يَفْتِنُوكَ عَن بَعْضِ مَا أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَيْكَ فَإِن تَوَلَّوْاْ فَٱعْلَمْ أَنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ٱللَّهُ أَن يُصِيبَهُم بِبَعْضِ ذُنُوبِهِمْ وَإِنَّ كَثِيراً مّنَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَفَـٰسِقُونَ [المائدة: 49]

قُلْ لاَّ أَتَّبِعُ أَهْوَاءكُمْ قَدْ ضَلَلْتُ إِذاً وَمَا أَنَاْ مِنَ ٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ [الأنعام: 56]

وَلَئِنِ ٱتَّبَعْتَ أَهْوَاءهُم مّن بَعْدِ مَا جَاءكَ مِنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ إِنَّكَ إِذَا لَّمِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ [البقرة: 145].

((إنه سيخرج في أمتي أقوام تجارى بهم تلك الأهواء كما يتجارى الكَلَب بصاحبه، لا يبقى منه عرق ولا مفصل إلا دخله))[7]

((ثلاث منجيات: خشية الله في السر والعلانية، والعدل في الرضا والغضب، والقصد في الفقر والغنى، وثلاث مهلكات: هوى متبع، وشح مطاع، وإعجاب المرء بنفسه))

فاتبع كتاب الله والسنن التي صحت فذاك إن اتبعت هو الهدى، ودع السؤال بلِمَ وكيف فإنه باب يجرّ ذوي البصيرة إلى العمى.

الخطبة الثانية

الحمد لله على إحسانه، والشكر له على توفيقه وامتنانه، وأشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له تعظيمًا لشأنه، وأشهد أن محمدًا عبده ورسوله الداعي إلى رضوانه، صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وصحبه وإخوانه، وسلم تسليمًا كثيرًا.

عباد الله:

اتقوا الله وراقبوه، وأطيعوه ولا تعصوه، يَـٰأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءامَنُواْ ٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَكُونُواْ مَعَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ [التوبة: 119].

احذروا طاعة الهوى في الحكم على الآخرين، والفصل بين المتنازعين، والشهادة بين المتخاصمين، وَلاَ يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَآنُ قَوْمٍ عَلَى أَلاَّ تَعْدِلُواْ ٱعْدِلُواْ هُوَ أَقْرَبُ لِلتَّقْوَىٰ وَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ [المائدة: 8].

يروي أبو هريرة رضي الله عنه: (على رأس الستين تصير الأمانة غنيمة، والصدقة غرامة، والشهادة معرفة، والحكم بالهوى) رواه الحاكم[1].

أيها المسلمون:

استغفروا الله واحذروه،

استعدوا للقاء الرب الجليل، وأعدوا كل عمل صالح جميل، وتفكروا في أنفسكم وما اشتملت عليه من العيوب، وحاسبوها

عباد الله:

وَتَزَوَّدُواْ فَإِنَّ خَيْرَ ٱلزَّادِ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ [البقرة: 197]. واعملوا أن ثمرة الاستماع الاتباع، فكونوا من الذين يستمعون القول فيتبعون أحسنه.

وصلوا وسلموا على خير البرية، وأزكى البشرية، فقد أمركم الله بذلك فقال: إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ وَمَلَـٰئِكَـتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى ٱلنَّبِىّ يٰأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءامَنُواْ صَلُّواْ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلّمُواْ تَسْلِيماً [ الأحزاب: 56].

اللهم صل وسلم على عبدك ورسولك محمد، وارض اللهم عن الخلفاء الراشدين، الأئمة المهدين، أبي بكر وعمر وعثمان وعلي، وعن سائر الصحابة أجمعين، والتابعين لهم، وتابعيهم بإحسان إلى يوم الدين، وعنا معهم بمنك ورحمتك وجودك يا أرحم الراحمين.
